This youth mental health course is specifically designed for support workers who want practical, real‑world skills to recognise and respond to mental health concerns in young people. Taught by two experienced Emergency Department nurses who routinely care for patients in acute mental health distress, this training provides reliable, evidence‑based strategies you can use immediately in your support role.
Young people today face increasing pressures from academic stress, social expectations, family challenges, and exposure to trauma. This course empowers support workers to understand these unique challenges, identify early signs of mental health decline, and respond safely and confidently in crisis situations.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Recognise physical, behavioural, and psychological indicators of mental health changes in young people.
Address immediate safety concerns following distressing or traumatic incidents.
Respond effectively to emerging youth mental health crises and know when and how to seek urgent professional help.
Understand the key pressures young people face and provide appropriate, resilience‑building support.
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.
An individual undertaking this course will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
Communication skills sufficient to engage in effective dialogue, and understand complex concepts related to mental health
Online study options: The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.
Please note: It is expected that the online pre-course learning will take up to 4 hours to complete.
However, these are approximate timeframes only. Individuals who previously completed similar training may complete the online component in a shorter timeframe. An individual who is new to training may take longer to work their way through all the learning content and theory questions.
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.
Online with face-to-face assessment: Face to Face contact time of at least 90 minutes.
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of multiple choice and short answer questions. All questions must be completed.
Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
Learning: I can learn and apply strategies to support young people, adapt to different situations, and follow safety procedures.
Reading: I can read and understand signs, care plans, risk procedures, and information about mental health support.
Writing: I can write clear notes or complete records that describe what I saw, heard, or did to support a young person.
Oral Communication: I can speak in a calm and respectful way, listen actively, and talk with others to share or gather information.
Numeracy: I can use time, dates, and simple scales or ratings to support care planning or monitor wellbeing.
