Frequently asked questions

You've got questions. We've got answers.

Why Choose Australian First Aid Institution (A.F.I.)?

We focus on the quality of the delivery, not the shear VOLUME of delivery, making the courses fit you and your needs. Our founders and directors are active Emergency Department Registered Nurses, Surf Life Savers and Emergency Medical Technicians. We have worked as nurses in small remote areas of Northern and Western Australia and understand the challenges of accessing quality training and currency. This is why we started A.F.I. To tailor courses for individuals and organisational needs.

What is the Unique Student Identifier (USI) and why do I need one?

The Unique Student Identifier (USI) is a lifelong reference number that provides individuals with access to their nationally recognised training records and results from January 1, 2015, onwards.

The USI is essential for enrolling in any accredited training course in Australia, including those offered by A.F.I. It enables the tracking of your educational progress and facilitates the retrieval of your training history. Providing your USI at the time of enrolment, whether online or over the phone, ensures timely issuance of your certification.

Obtaining a USI is a straightforward process that typically takes only a few minutes via the official Australian Government website. Please note that this is a government-mandated requirement and must be completed independently. A.F.I. staff are not authorised to apply for a USI on your behalf. You can apply here: HERE or find out more information here:  https://www.usi.gov.au/

How will I be assessed?

The assessment can be made up of a combination of pre-course multiple choice/short answer questions online, performance tasks and simulated practical scenarios. For online only delivery, we will give you much clearer instructions once a booking has been completed.

Can I book as a group, or does each person have to book individually?

We are happy to cater for both! It’s best to see our booking calendar if you are an individual looking for a course. If the course you are after is not currently available, please reach out and we will see what we can do. If you want to create a group booking, please contact us at info@firstaidinstitution.com.au

Do I need to have any prior knowledge?

Absolutely not. Our expert trainers are accustomed to introducing people to first aid for the first time, you will be surprised as to how much you already know.

What's the difference between nationally recognised and non-accredited courses?

Nationally recognised courses are delivered under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and lead to a formal qualification or Statement of Attainment that is recognised across Australia. These courses are delivered by, or in partnership with, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to ensure national standards are met.

Non-accredited courses, while not part of the AQF, are still highly valuable. They’re designed to meet specific workplace and industry needs, helping you stay current with best practice, refresh your knowledge, and maintain confidence in your role.

Many participants complete non-accredited courses to support continuing professional development (CPD) or to meet mandatory training requirements in their workplace.

Is A.F.I. a registered training organisation (RTO)?

Currently no, it is a partner with Allens Training (RTO 90909).

The nationally recognised courses that we offer are delivered through this partnership. We also deliver non-accredited training options through Allens Training (RTO 90909).

Can A.F.I. come to my workplace and for how many students?

Yes, in fact it’s our preferred method of delivery. Why? Because we can tailor the training to suit your workplace needs so all staff feel confident in themselves, each other, and the workplace first aid plan. It’s also a great opportunity for team members to practise delivering first aid and CPR together, ensuring everyone is on the same page when an emergency happens in real life.

We’re happy to cater for large groups Feel free to contact us at info@firstaidinstitution.com.au or give us a call on 0401517200.

What do I wear and bring to the course?

Please bring a pen and notebook, a smart phone or ipad with access to the internet, enough water and snacks for the duration of the course and please dress in comfortable and casual clothing that will allow you to bend, kneel, lie and practice CPR compressions! We think long hair is awesome, but we ask that it is tied up while participating in practical components of our courses.

The course I want to do is not showing up in the booking calendar

If there is a course on our website that you would like to do that is not showing up in the booking calendar, please email us at info@firstaidinstitution.com.au and we can let you know when it will be available next.
