Personal Care Worker
This course is designed for healthcare workers involved in manual handling, from routine tasks to more hazardous ones. It equips participants with the skills and knowledge to perform manual tasks safely and respond to first aid incidents, including emergencies such as cardiac arrest.
Students will learn to recognise and manage hazardous manual tasks, apply safe manual handling techniques, and understand body mechanics to prevent injury. The course also covers how to recognise and treat various first aid incidents, call an ambulance, perform CPR, and use a defibrillator until emergency services arrive. It includes initial intervention for serious conditions before professional medical help arrives, providing a first aid response in a range of settings, including community and workplace environments.
Training aligns with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards, industry codes of practice, and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
The following units will be included in your certificate:
HLTWHS005 - Conduct manual tasks safely
HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support
HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.
An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:
Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills including CPR and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins
Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes and comfortable/practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment
Important note: In order to issue an accredited certificate, CPR must be performed on the floor with no exemptions. Participants will be required to demonstrate rescue breathing techniques on manikins. Participants will not have the opportunity to request an exemption from providing rescue breaths if they wish to gain a competent result in the Unit of Competency and/or qualification.
Online study options: The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.
Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.
Face-to-Face: Face to Face contact time of at least 11.5 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment: Face to Face contact time of at least 90 Mins
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.
HLTWHS005 - Conduct manual tasks safely: Not applicable
HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation: 12 months
HLTAID010 - Provide basic emergency life support: 36 months
HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid: 36 months

Performance tasks and Practical scenarios:
Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position
Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
Perform CPR on an infant
Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
Manage a casualty with asthma
Manage a choking casualty
Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)
Manual Handling Task: Horizontal movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
Manual Handling Task: High to low movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
Manual Handling Task: Low to high movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
Documentation – Completion of a Risk Assessment form and an Incident Report Form.
Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.
